Nadia Bolz-Weber: Salvation on the Small Screen? 24 Hours of Christian Television
This is my book. It will change your life. Ok, not really.
Kester Brewin: Signs of Emergence
This book is tremendous. Drawing on his background as a math teacher, Brewin explores why the church is where it is and why it is to change...using complexity theory. This is a must read.
Edward and Lorna Mornin: Saints: A Visual Guide
This is a gorgeous handbook of the saints.
Peter Rollins: How (Not) to Speak of God.
Pete is an emerging church pastor of the Ikon community in Belfast, Ireland. I can't recommend this book enough.
Phyllis Tickle: The divine hours
Phyllis is one the smartest women I've ever met. I'm using this book for matins and noon prayer as well as vespers and compline.
Anne Lamott: Traveling Mercies : Some Thoughts on Faith
One of my favorite books of all time. She's pretty cranky and sarcastic too.
Eddie Gibbs: Emerging Churches: Creating Christian Community in Postmodern Cultures
Gibbs and Bolger spent 5 years compiling this book which relys heavily on interviews with emerging church leaders in the US and the UK. They seem to favor independant churches over denominational ones...so very little is said about us "loyal radicals"

nice font! The inside of the wrist looks like a tender spot - you're very brave!

Nice! I am also getting this incorporated on a banner in the left arm with my Jesus sleeve.

Hi, I'm a former "lickems" pastor who left after he couldn't take the misogyny and xenophobia... sadly much directed at my poor wife, a disabled theology prof who was told her migraines were due to unconfessed sin, etc.
I stumbled across your page while looking for tats on "simul iustus..."
My wife has a great 1/2 sleeve she designed herself depicting creation... you can see it on my blog.
I'll have to come over and check out more of your blog entries, but now I have to study for class... having been burnt out by church politics and B.S., I'm now in nursing school.
(Incidentally... isn't "sarcastic Lutheran" a bit redundant, kinda like rigged Chicago election?)

Reminds me of a guy who had LOVE tattooed on one set of his knuckles and HATE on the other. Isn't there a biblical injunction against tattoos? Talk about irony!

i have one tattoo. i keep thinking i need more. it's fun to see peoples' reactions (especially that of the youth) when they see that their mild-mannered pastor has a tattoo. just think if i had multiple tattoos!!!

I'm planning to have my first tattoo but I don't know where the hell will I get the guts. I am afraid since my friend told me that it was really painful and this is the reason on why I can't pursue my plan.

I like your tat. In fact, I'm getting one of the exact same saying. It is going above my flaming Straticaster, pinups tats and the "like"on my uppr right arm. I guess there truly is "nothing new under the sun"
BTW I too am a VERY sarcastic former LCMS pastor of over ten years. Now I'm a professor of religious studies and philosophy for a local college, and a rocker by night.
Peace,
The Rev.

You seem to be collecting ex LCMSers with tattoos. I've got three but have stayed LCMS for 30 years--got really blessed by a loving, accepting, semi-sarcastic congregation. Memo to Mark above: go ahead and get a few more--what's a little extra ink among friends?

To Holey Skin: tats on the upper arm don't hurt--aim there for your first one.

I'm an ELCA pastor, former mission redeveloper, yadda yadda yadda. Love your ink; stumbled across it looking for images to help with designing my next tattoo. Big, 3D, stained glass window set in a Gothic arch with simul iustus et peccator engraved in the stone surround. Once I get it done, I'll send you a pic. Blessings on your ministry.
